Leroy Bourgogne Rouge 2014

Red Wines

“It is almost impossible to put into words the significance of Madame Lalou Bize Leroy and her Domaine Leroy estate in the world of wine. Clive Coates MW poses the rhetorical question “Is this the greatest estate in Burgundy? ” and answers How do you determine great? Is it size? Is it quality? Is it price? Is it reputation? Is it the amount of media cover age? However, you do compute it, the greatest domaines of Burgundy today must be those under the control of Lalou Bize, The Domaine Leroy and her own Domaine d ‘Auvenay. The estates of Jadot, Faiveley and Bouchard Pere et Fils are far larger, that of Romani Conti the most splendid in terms of percentage of grand terroir but for nobility of it ‘s wines, pride of place must go to Leroy and to Domaine d ‘Auvenay. The sheer concentration. depth and intensity that Lalou Bize manages to squeeze into her bottles is breathtaking. ”

This 2014 is quite structured with plenty of aromas/flavours of dark fruits with briary forest floor characters. Very high quality wine this is no ordinary Bourgogne.. but this is Leroy, renowned for muscular and powerful wines. Elegance and poise with firm tannins on the palate. Pinot Noir at its finest…. Decant if drinking now perhaps or lay down in cellar

PRODUCER

The latest release of the Maison Leroy wines caused a stir at Waters Wine as we had never had the opportunity to taste a Leroy wine before. A legend in the wine world, Lalou Bize-Leroy was until 1992 a co director of the Domaine de la Romanee Conti. After leaving DRC she focused her efforts on the family business, which now occupies 21 hectares of some of the greatest vineyard sites in the world. The estate is run with obsessive attention to detail. Biodynamic, low yields, only the ripest grapes are hand harvested and a further strict fruit selection applied. The grapes are fermented in large format oak, without destemming or crushing. Regular pushing down of the cap and moving the fermenting juice from under the cap to the top ensures the wines are incredibly fresh, detailed, coloured and powerful. Lalou Bize-Leroy is an incomparable winemaker and her wines are the most concentrated, dense, thrilling wines that Burgundy has to offer.
