Vintage 2004 Chris Kissack, 95 points
A great colour here, at its heart very dark still, with a touch of crimson to the rim. Aromatically it is expressive, pure and open, with some classic elements including crushed blackcurrants and damsons, with warmer notes of soot, tar and liquorice, as well as some fragrant nuances of peony and violet. Medium-bodied but full of charm and confidence, with a lightly creamed sense to the fruit on the palate, it comes backed up by an attractive seam of tannins, firm and sooty yet obviously ripe, supple and well-integrated. These give a delightful framework for the finish, supporting the fruit and texture from within and never dominating. A really attractive wine, and bearing in mind the vintage of origin, it is a great success. The Wine Doctor 27/11/2019

Rouge rubis dense. Bouquet compact, dense. As with its next-door neighbour run by the Barton’s, the Cuvelier seem to have been able to take a very challenging vintage and make something wonderful with it. This has a dark and glossy hue at its core, the rim showing a black-cherry pigment, and it still appears very youthful. The nose, like so many of the best 2003s right now, seems explosive, with toasted blackcurrant, black pepper and a sweetly baked blackberry richness, all touched with classical threads of juniper and bay. You will never forget which vintage you are drinking though, as it is that sweetly roasted character that is most prominent here. The palate is imposing, the texture sinewy and savoury, and I find this impressive at the vintage is perhaps more associated with a rather more modern, sweeter profile. The acidity is muted, but there is no shortage of structure, ripe tannins, liquor and black fruits, with a lightly sappy edge. Ripe yet surprisingly cool, substantial and energetic, this is really impressive. The Wine Doctor 19/12/2019
