Domaine Saumaize-Michelin is on a roll and making consistently wonderful white Burgundies at affordable prices. Based in the tiny and pretty village of Vergisson, west of the town of Macon and just under the famous “Roche de Solutre”, Christine and Roger Saumaize runs one of the star domaine of the region since 1978. This couple of 'purists' produces wines with lovely finesse, minerality and complexity. As Roger has a huge respect for his 'Terroir', all the work in the vineyard is biodynamic. Horses are back in the best limestone vineyards to plough like in the past – fantastic thing to see again! It is a very small domaine with only 9.5 hectares planted in Chardonnay and 0,5 in Gamay. They make numerous vineyard designated Pouilly Fuisses as well as Macon and Saint Veran. Yet another stand out producer and even in this trickier vintage the wines really are something else! Unsurprisingly I'm not the only one enchanted by this small domaine in the Mâconnais... Neal Martin, Allen Meadows and William Kelley are all worshipping at the altar of Saumaize-Michelin, and it's time we all joined them! Tasting the range earlier this month I was shocked by how well they stood up to the Cote d'Or, outshining even the odd Puligny 1er Cru! Allen Meadows continues to wax lyrical about each cuvees, so be sure to grab a case before they vanish in this frustratingly short vintage.
