The Domenico Clerico 2021 Barolo Bussia Bricotto opens to dark currant, plum, iris root and a hint of black licorice. It boasts a soft, medium-plus texture. Representing an interesting winemaking departure for this estate, a small part ferments with whole cluster in open-top barriques with punch-downs. It matures in seven-hectoliter neutral Slavonian oak. Fruit comes from nine rows of vines in Bussia Soprana, the historic core of Bussia. This was the first vineyard that Domenico Clerico acquired in 1976, before focusing heart and soul on Ginestra starting in 1978. Because of the low yields of old vines, this wine only appeared in the best vintages, but as a symbol of the estate’s renewal, this production will be more consistent going forward. Drink 2026-2045.
