Johann Georg Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from the oldest vineyard on the Kalleske farm, planted in 1875, that produces very low yields from gnarly, dry grown vines. The wine is a tribute to Johann Georg Kalleske, the first Kalleske ancestor to migrate to Australia from Prussia in 1838. The old vine fruit is open-top fermented, basket pressed and matured in new and used French and American hogsheads for two years prior to bottling. A powerful, but elegant wine of great sophistication 2018 Johann Georg Shiraz is deep red-black in colour. Alive with aromatics, the nose is filled with floral perfume, dark berries, cedar, nutmeg and an attractive savoury jus. There’s also dark chocolate and a hint of coffee. The palate displays perfect balance. It is full bodied with powerful flavours and intensity but maintaining poise. Black fruits are complexed with fine barrel ferment characters. It has a viscous mouthfeel counterposed with a vein of graceful natural tannins throughout. This is a replete wine, no gaps, distinguished, completed with a long-lasting finish. 2018 Johann is a superb Shiraz that will ultimately benefit from a decade or two in the cellar.
