Loic Mahe began building his Domaine in the Savennieres appellation in the Loire Valley in the year 2000, purchasing unplanted land within the AOC and later purchasing significant old vine plantings. The winery is Chateau la Franchaie, where his wines - all organically certified and made with biodynamic vineyard practices - are now made. Loic farms 11 hectares of Chenin, on perfectly situated south-facing vineyards on the gentle slopes above the escarpment north of the Loire River. The vineyards are predominantly blue and red schist (slate/shale) under very thin topsoils of wind-blown sands, along with some unique parcels on volcanic rock. The wine is fermented to dry with indigenous yeasts in old oak barrels. The only addition is very small amounts of SO2 close to bottling.
